Apifera with special guest Frankie Reyes play at the Jack London
Stones Throw's Apifera are making their USA Tour debut, they're a special band with a sought after sound to go with them. The members of Apifera are established musicians in their own right: Yuvi Havkin releases electronic jazz as Rejoicer; Yonatan Albalak is frontman for post rock/psych group Geshem; Amir Bresler leads Afrobeat jazz funk group Liquid Saloon; and Nitai Hershkovits is best known for his solo piano records, with a 2023 album on ECM. Psychedelic jazz supergroup Apifera bring a melting pot of influences and experience, and the welcome addition of vocals, to their second Stones Throw album “Keep the Outside Open”, which also features their friend, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, for the album’s closing track. When these musicians come together, the effect is like switching between radio stations: a dash of prog, a twist of post-rock, and a heavy dose of psychedelia, with the members’ shared background in jazz tying it all together. Frankie Reyes is the alias of GB, Gifted & Blessed aka Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker. His most recent album “Heard and Unheard” distills years of making music in a variety of styles and under different names into a singular statement. “Boleros Valses y Mas” was his highly acclaimed Stones Throw debut, comprised of popular Latin standards, reworked by Reyes with an Oberheim synthesizer. Reyes is a founding member of the esteemed L.A. beat scene, who performed at the very first Low End Theory events, and has produced and collaborated with artists including Kelela, Ras G, and Steve Arrington. He has since made a name for himself in the underground electronic and dance music scenes, releasing music on Eglo and All City, among others.
