Just in time for Mardi Gras, Bravo! Northwest Concerts presents “Carnival in Venice” with the combined
voices of the Bravo! Northwest Chorale & Madeleine Choir, the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, Michael
Vaughn Jazz Quartet and featuring jazz & classical Clarinetist Michael Kissinger. The Portland concert is
Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $30 for adults. Students age 18 and younger are free. For tickets
and info see www.bravoconcerts.com or call the Box Office at 360-906-0441.
The concert highlights the two most popular works of Venetian Composer, Antonio Vivaldi. The
Gloria, written for choir, soloists, & chamber orchestra, is full of “hip” rhythms and colorful harmonies -
as fun to sing as it is to listen to! Like many recognizable classical melodies, the Gloria has also been used
in a number of films, including the 1996 Scott Hicks film Shine, the 2011 film The Hunter, and the 1985 Andrei
Konchalovsky film Runaway Train.
The Five Seasons, arranged by Hollywood composer Jorge Calandrelli, is a “cool” jazz version of Vivaldi’s
famous Four Seasons. It is a virtuosic piece for clarinet solo – weaving Vivaldi’s classical orchestra themes
with improvisatory sections played by jazz quartet. Clarinetist Michael Kissinger performs this Northwest
premiere that is classical cross-over music at its best!
“Clarinetist Michael Kissinger is equally at home in both the classical and jazz world, having performed with
classical orchestras in the U.S. and in Europe and with such notable jazz/pop musicians as Diane Schuur, The
Brubeck Brothers, Jose Feliciano and others. The Five Seasons, with its classical roots & virtuosic jazz
improvisation is right up his alley” says Music Director Maria Manzo.
Grammy-winning singer Diane Schuur says, “Doc Kissinger is the best jazz clarinetist I have ever worked with”!
