Park Avenue has been the advanced jazz combo at Portland State since 2011. They have performed in many venues in and around Portland and have won awards at the Reno Jazz Festival. This year, they will travel to New York to perform a set at the famous Smalls Jazz Club with jazz great Steve Wilson.
The ironically-named guitar-less Guitar Heroes ensemble at Portland State University is comprised of some of the top students in the jazz department. This group is treated as a professional level group, playing a music from working ensembles in the area such as the Mel Brown Septet as well student arrangements and original compositions.
The PSU Vocal Collective is a contemporary multi-voiced ensemble made up of 14 singers and rhythm section. They perform unique arrangements of jazz and popular music that use voices to create interesting textures and complex harmony. This concert will feature favorites by Elton John, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin and more.
