Jakob Bro (1978) is a Danish guitar player and composer living in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Jakob Bro is currently leading a trio with Joey Baron and Thomas Morgan. In the fall of 2016 the trio released a highly acclaimed album Streams through ECM Records. Bro is also working with Palle Mikkelborg and with Bro/Knak, a collaboration with the Danish electronica producer Thomas Knak (Opiate). Bro is a former member of Paul Motian & The Electric Bebop Band (Garden of Eden, ECM – 2006) and a current member of Tomasz Stanko’s Dark Eyes Quintet (Dark Eyes, ECM – 2009).
He has released 13 records as a bandleader including musicians like Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Chris Cheek, Thomas Morgan, Ben Street, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D’Angelo, Chris Speed, George Garzone, Craig Taborn, Oscar Noriega, David Virelles, Jon Christensen, Jesper Zeuthen, Anders Christensen, Peter Laugesen, Kresten Osgood, Jakob Høyer, Nicolai Munch-Hansen, Jonas Westergaard, Søren Kjærgaard, Nikolaj Torp Larsen and many more.He has toured in Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, South Africa, USA and most of Europe.
Drummer Joey Baron is largely self-taught by means of watching others play and listening to recordings, radio and television. His early influences ran the gamut from Ed Sullivan show guests, to “The Wild Wild West” television show theme to records by Art Blakey, Ray Charles, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, James Brown, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Besides being a member of the Bill Frisell Band for 10 years until 1995, he has performed and recorded with an impressive list of musicians – including Carmen McRae, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Hampton Hawes, Chet Baker, Laurie Anderson, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Vinicus Cantuaria, Jay McShann, David Bowie, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Big Joe Turner, Philip Glass, John Abercrombie, Mel Lewis, Pat Martino, Harry Sweets Edison, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Jim Hall, Randy Brecker, Marian McPartland, John Scofield, Marc Johnson and The Lounge Lizards.
Baron has lead his own trios one with John Medeski and Marc Ribot; and “Barondown” which featured Ellery Eskelin (saxophone) and Josh Roseman (trombone). “Barondown” recorded three albums – Crackshot (Avant), RAIsed Pleasure Dot (New World) and Tongue in Groove (JMT). He also co-lead the group “Miniature” (with Tim Berne and Hank Roberts) and was a member of “Naked City” (with John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Fred Frith and Wayne Horvitz) and of Zorn’s group Masada (Dave Douglas and Greg Cohen).
Thomas Morgan is an American jazz bassist whose many credits reflect his wide range and depth. He has played with a dazzling assortment of bandleaders including John Abercrombie, Tomasz Stanko, David Binney, Paul Motian, and Masabumi Kikuchi, to name but a few. Who can forget his mesmerizing duo collaboration at the 2018 PDX jazz festival with Bill Frisell. Morgan was born in Haymarket, California and began studying cello at age seven. He studied the bass in high school and attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a Bachelor’s degree. While in college he immersed himself in New York City’s jazz scene. He began his recording career with 2002’s Down Homeless on PG Records in a quartet with Will Vinson, Peter Gabis, and Steve Newcombe, billed as VNMG. That band gigged in and around the city as much as possible but Morgan was also busy working with other players, establishing himself on the scene with his clean, woody tone, fluid improvisational ability, and canny timekeeping skills; he proved adaptable to many settings and bandleaders.
