In the words of Duke Ellington: “There are two kinds of music: good music, and the other kind”. Led by saxophonist Logan Strosahl, The New Normal is a quintet devoted to Jazz as a methodology rather than a style. With Cyrus Nabipoor (trumpet), Matt Mayhall (drums), Mike Gamble (guitar), and Andrew Jones (bass), each of these highly individual artists find their own ground for expression in music - much of it Strosahl’s own - oriented around different grooves (such as a Turkish usul in 5/8, an Argentinian Chacarera, and a baroque Courante) structured improvisation, the push and pull between independence and inter-dependence, and the compositions themselves.
