Jazz by 5

Jazz By 5 is a musical collaboration that celebrates the eras of swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz and beyond. The performance includes a mixture of classic jazz standards coupled with original material from the members of the ensemble, who have performed with legends like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakey. Javon Jackson initially comprised Jazz By 5 in an effort to perform, tour and collaborate with his close friends, all of whom have made an indelible mark on the jazz genre.

Tenor Saxophonist Javon Jackson came into international prominence touring and recording with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He’s released 14 recordings as a bandleader and has recorded over 135 albums with the biggest names in jazz.

Jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker has helped shape the sound of jazz, R&B and rock. He’s played on hundreds of albums by artists like Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, Jaco Pastorius and Frank Zappa. Along with his brother Michael, he formed the Brecker Brothers Band, earning seven GRAMMY® nominations.

Pianist Joanne Brackeen has been announced as a 2018 National Endowment for The Arts Jazz Master. She has recorded more than two dozen recordings as a leader, which include 100 of her 300 original compositions. Whatever the musical setting, whether solo, duo, trio, quartet or quintet, Brackeen’s unique style of playing commands attention.

Legendary bassist and two-time GRAMMY® Award winner Eddie Gomez has been on the cutting edge of music for over four decades. He has worked with jazz giants like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Goodman, Chick Corea and Lionel Hampton.

Drummer Jimmy Cobb is the elder statesman of all of Miles Davis’ incredible bands. Cobb’s inspirational work with Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963, and included the masterpiece Kind of Blue, the most popular jazz recording in history.
