It’s one thing to talk about music as a balm in troubled times, and it’s another thing entirely to light a candle in the darkness, providing musical illumination for oneself and one’s neighbors. Portland pianist/ composer Gordon Lee, a longtime institution on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene, turned to his trusty Baldwin Grand when the advent of COVID in 2020 swept away all his gigs. How Can It Be?, his seventh album as a leader, features compositions he created during that difficult time, music that sustained him and brought succor to his neighborhood. The quartet session covers a lot of emotional ground, encompassing tenderness and anxiety, disdain and affection, playfulness and wide-eyed wonder.
