Chris Shuttleworth Trio performs with Natsukasii Soul at the Jack London
Chris Shuttleworth Trio
With a sound born from the hyper-local Logan Square jazz scene of Chicago and grounded in an unabashed search for beauty and melody, Chris Shuttleworth has quickly established himself as one of the most unique voices in the Northwest creative music scene. This trio explores the traditional jazz repertoire through a modern lens, pulling from influences all across the musical spectrum to create something fresh, unified, and unique. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, Chris moved to Chicago to pursue a Jazz Studies degree at the prestigious DePaul University School of Music, where he studied under a number of staples of the Chicago music scene, including Dennis Carroll, Mark Fisher, and Charles Vernon. He has shared the stage with many diverse acts and jazz heavyweights such as Wycliffe Gordon, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Randy Brecker, Ken Peplowski, Greg Ward, and Dana Hall, to pop acts including Beats Antique, Hellogoodbye, The Temptations, and The Four Tops. He has also toured extensively as a leader and a sideman, having performed in the majority of the United States as well as internationally as far as Shanghai. A passionate educator, Chris has worked with students and ensembles at Lane Technical High School, South Eugene High School, Willamette High School, DePaul University, and the University of Oregon. He currently maintains a studio of private students and continues to perform as a leader as well as maintaining a schedule as an in-demand sideman.
Natsukasii Soul
Formed at the end of 2021, the quintet has played over 60 gigs in town and Portland. The band's repertoire includes vocal based jazz tunes and originals led by Autumn Rose whose voice is distinctively soulful and sultry. Trumpet player Frank Visconti adds melodic color over complex chord structures played by Vincent Panero on keys and guitar. Highly syncopated rhythms from Sam Hayward on drums and Greg McKelvey on electric and stand up bass weave the band's sound into a unique experience with deep roots in jazz. Their set lists cover tunes by Freddie Hubbard, Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper, Wayne Shorter, Oliver Nelson and Blondie. The band is working on an original studio album with Bespoke Recording Studios and continues to have a busy live performance schedule Autumn Rose is from Eugene and has been singing all her life. She speaks Japanese and named the band after her favorite word, Natsukashii, which is the feeling you get when you sense something and it brings you back to happy thoughts of the past. She writes songs for the band as well as arranging our tunes. Frank Visconti is from New York City and studied trumpet from 3rd grade with classical trumpet teacher Richard Brooks who was principal trumpet at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He later studied with legendary trumpet players Laurie Frink, Lew Soloff and Tony Glausi. Vincent Panero is from Santa Cruz and performed in Japan for seven years. He also speaks Japanese. He plays keys, guitar and writes many of our original tunes. Greg McKelvey is a classically trained bass player who also studied jazz. Greg's got the goods! Sam Hayward is from Eugene and is one of the busiest drummers in town, frequently playing in Portland and Seattle with Soul Vibrator, Doink! and Molasses.
