Ron Bertucci and Olem Alves began playing together in 2010 and have enjoyed more than a decade of making music together. The Bertucci-Alves Group (AKA The Alves-Bertucci Group) has performed as a Quintet, Quartet, Trio and even as a Trombone/Guitar Duo on a number of occasions. Though Ron and Olem have enjoyed teaming up with a number of outstanding jazz musicians over the years, this current iteration of the quintet features Doug Doerfert on trumpet, Alexandre Pabst on bass and Ryan Biesack on drums.

Ron and Olem are excited to be returning to The Jazz Station as they reconnect with a number of beloved standards as well as presenting a few original works.

Ron is retired from Lane Community College where he was director of instrumental music and jazz from 1992-2013 and he continues to teach trombone there. Ron founded the Lane Jazz Festival in 1998 and teamed up with Steve Owen as co-director of the Oregon Jazz Festival (at LCC and UO) from 2003-2015. Ron played with the Eugene Symphony from 1979-2016 and has also performed with the Oregon Bach Festival, Oregon Festival of American Music – with Marin Alsop, Eugene Opera, Oregon Mozart Players and the Eugene Brass Quintet.

Olem has been on the faculty at Lane since the early 2000’s and currently directs the Jazz Combos in addition to teaching guitar and other courses. Olem is extremely active as a performer in and around the area working most weekends throughout the year; especially with his funk/rock/fushion group “Inner Limits”.

Doug Doerfert is the Director of Ensembles at Lane Community College where he conducts the Lane Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and teaches Music Fundamentals. As one of the full-time faculty, Doug works with music teachers across Lane County as a liaison in recruiting and outreach. As an active performer, Doug has played trumpet with Eugene Composer’s Big Band, Jazz Station Monday Night Big Band, Jazz Kings, SHEDD Musical Theater productions, and the Ridgeline Brass Quintet. He has also performed with the Eugene Symphonic Band and the Oregon Brass Society.

Alexandre Pabst has recently graduated from U of O with a Bachelors of Science in General Music and a Bachelors of Science in Economics and is an alumni of Lane Community College where he studied with Olem Alves, Nathan Waddell and Ron Bertucci among others. Alex performs regularly in a guitar/bass duo with Olem and has just this fall joined the Bertucci/Alves group. Alex plans to become more active as a bassist in Eugene as he begins his pursuit of a PhD in economics.

Ryan Biesack is a jazz percussionist and educator who holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Music inJazz Performance  from the University of Oregon. Biesack is currently the Director of Jazz Ensembles at Oregon State University where has taught since 2009.

Biesack has toured, performed or recorded with Ron Miles, Wayne Horvitz, DJ Spooky, Todd Sickafoose, Joe Manis, Ben Monder, Halie Loren, and many others.

Biesack can be heard on his trio’s 2018 PJCE records release Trio Untold, which has received high praise, making several best jazz of 2018 lists. He has served as a Drum Set  committee member for Percussive Arts Society since 2018 and has been a Sabian Cymbals Artist since 2013.
