Ben Medler is back to the recording studios again with a stellar crew of Portland based musicians. The current project of original sounds celebrates the music of Bill Evans, Grachan Moncur III, MCCoy Tyner, J.C. Higginbotham, Chick Corea, Steve Turre and plenty others.
Ben spent his high school years in Massachusetts studying with trombonist Phil Wilson and at summer workshops with German trombonist Jiggs Whigham. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he moved to Oregon where he completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz at Portland State University, Ben taught bands at Portland’s Wilson High School and years later started the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra with wife, Michelle Medler. Ben splits his career as a composer, teacher and performer on many instruments including trombone, acoustic/electric basses, trumpet and vocals. He’s on faculty at Portland State University, Lewis & Clark College and the director of the dance band, The Shanghai Woolies.
Every day of the week in the evenings, and often multiple times per day on weekends, The 1905 plays host to the exquisite jazz community that Portland has to offer. In addition to keeping a finger on the pulse of the local scene, The 1905 has hosted internationally recognized musicians such as 5 time Grammy award-winner Antonio Sanchez, and Jazz greats like Ralph Peterson Jr.
