Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, Avery Scanlon is a guitarist, composer, arranger, and educator, currently based in Eugene, Oregon. The son of Brian Scanlon, a notable Los Angeles-based studio woodwind player, he developed an early affinity for music in an environment that nourished his creative interests. He has had the opportunity to play with notable musicians such as Bennie Maupin, Steve Lehman, Myka 9, and Ulysses Owens Jr., to name a few. Avery studied at the University of Rochester’s prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York for two years and transferred to California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, where he received a BFA in Jazz Guitar (2020). After graduating from CalArts, he accepted a full tuition scholarship award to attend graduate school and teach music as a Graduate Teaching Fellow concurrently at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, where he received an MM in Jazz Studies (2022). Following this, Avery accepted a Pro-Tempore Instructor of Music position at the University of Oregon, where he teaches guitar students in both the Jazz Studies and Popular Music areas. He has quickly become an important player in the Eugene music community.
